LOL, that would explain the times I was unable to access the site from Turkey. Just checking the build up to the wiki to get a better idea of mediawiki actually, thought I just had to comment on the "spam from Turkey" discussion.

I'm glad someone else likes this idea too. Will definitely go ahead with it then.

After thinking about it some more, I realised that nobody (except Mother Theresa maybe!) just wants to help people and get nothing in return. We all do it for some selfish reason, e.g. recognition.

Me, I'm doing this site not because I love Unisa (I don't) or because I want to help students pass (I don't). I'm doing it because I want to have a community site to point to and say "That's my creation".

So why would students want to give up their precious study time to help others when they'd rather help themselves? If the home page links to editors' blogs that would be a real incentive to contribute. Must try think up some more perks...

And limiting the feed to displaying maybe 5 blogs, selected by taking the top contributors (people who edited most, and also who edited most recently) will encourage editing. Good point!!

I think that's an excellent idea! It's a great thank you to the editors and a great way for readers of the site to see what other things the contributers work on.

To prevent this from being abused, maybe you should make it that an editor's blog may only appear in that section once they have 25 edits? Since the number of editors vs readers is quite small, it shouldn't be too much work to manage. What do you think?

In my experience the course content will be the same in both semesters.

In some of the subjects, even the assignments that we have to do is the same. They will print only one tutorial letter and just state that if you are doing the course in the first semester, the assignments must be in by eg 30 April and if you are registered for the second semester it has to be in by 30 September.

Ys, Ss an 09s is only administrative tags and really have no meaning besides telling you for which year/semster you are registered, so you can feel comfortable leaving it completely out.

Thanks for clarifying! I have a question now: Does this mean that if you take e.g. ETH102L in the second semester (i.e. ETH102L-S2) it is the same course material as ETH102L-S1?
Those DSC codes won't be a problem because the format on WikiStudent is going to use the full code, so it will be e.g. INF1059 rather than just INF105.
I hope it makes sense to leave out all these 09s and Ys and Ss...

Eg LRL241P-09-Y1 is as it is displayed in MyUnisa. It means LRL241P registered for 2009 (09) and it is a year (Y1) module.

Same is ETH102L-S1. It is ETH102L registered for the first semester.

Another thing that might look funny is eg that there is 6 subjects starting with DSC370 and with just an added number as DSC3701, DSC3702,...
