Unisa and wiki clothing :)

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Back in the days when I was a Unisa-mad, devoted student I bought myself some Unisa clothes including:

this Jersey
Unisa jersey
and this T-shirt
Unia T-shirt
I even have other items like Unisa-branded writing paper, coffee mugs and a pencil!

The reason why I’m mentioning this now is because I’ve just ordered myself a Wikipedia top from Cafepress.com. Here’s what it looks like:

It arrives in 3 weeks and as soon as I open the parcel I’m gonna take a pic of me modelling it and upload it to my WikiStudent profile! I love the pink arms, by the way ;-)

Now, why would I rather present myself wearing a Wikipedia top than a Unisa one? Several reasons:

  1. I don’t want students to be under the misapprehension that WikiStudent is affiliated with Unisa. (That will result in a flood of Unisa complaints coming my way!)
  2. I’d like to enforce the wiki aspect of the site, i.e. that it’s not just an ordinary website, but a wiki that you’re supposed to contribute towards.
  3. My loyalty towards Unisa has diminished over the years and I never wear that jersey or T-shirt anymore. The pink pullover is way better-looking too, don’t you think?

Now for an idea (I’m always getting ideas!). Some time in the future, when WikiStudent is really well-established, I’ll have some cool shirts made and sell them. I’m serious! The business cards went down well, so I’m all for some more offline marketing.

Offline promotion

In 2007 I had 200 business cards made, to advertise WikiStudent. Here’s what they looked like:

I handed them out on Campus around exam time and noticed a nice increase in registrations that week :-)

Thought I’d bring this up, since I wrote about the new logo the other day. Next time cards get made they’ll look completely different. I wonder if there are any students who still have the above cards I gave them…?

SEO Expert Services

I’ve just got myself a 6-month subscription at David Viney’s SEO Expert Services website. Registering gives you access to the forum where you can ask him for SEO (search engine optimisation) advice. I have a couple of questions whose answers were not in his Get to the top on Google book, so I joined at last. My questions have to do with things like the use of hyphens in ISBNs, and how to optimise for keywords like Unisa module codes which can be written in several different ways.

Tip for anyone wanting to register on his site: Subscriptions cost £20 per month for a minimum of 6 months, which amounts to nearly R2000! If you buy his book, you’ll get an activation code which gives you the subscription for free. The book costs R226 at Loot at the moment which makes the ordinary subscription rate look like a rip-off!
